Following detailed research, development and extensive product trials carried out in conjunction with the University of Bologna and a network of third party power and electrical experts, Borri S.p.A designed and developed a unique transformer free UPS solution for Eni, which can achieve up to 99.5 percent efficiency at half load to help Eni break new efficiency records.
Borri's managing director, Ian Tucker, commented: "The new UPS system developed by Borri has surpassed Eni's expectations. Standard UPS units achieve an average efficiency value of 93 percent, but the additional six percent efficiency achieved by our team will represent more than €600,000 per year in financial savings and an environmental saving of 3,000 tons of CO2 (assuming production is thermoelectric).
"This highly innovative UPS solution has been independently certified by TÜV Rheinland, which has confirmed that the UPS can reach record values of 99.46 percent at half load and 99.43 percent at full load, which is a huge achievement for everyone involved in its development.
"Eni has also invested a lot of resource into forming the overall architectural design of the site and has pushed hard to ensure that all the electrical pathways have been optimised. Careful considerations have also been made with regards to the positioning of the UPS equipment to ensure that maximum efficiency levels can be achieved."
Now entering phase two of the project, over the next few months Borri's team of specialist engineers will initially be positioning and configuring 55 units of 200kW UPS systems across 5,200sqm of the new data centre site located in Ferrera Erbognone, Pavia, Italy, adjacent to Eni's power plant. The state-of-the-art transformer free UPS solution will support Eni's central computer systems which will have energy absorption levels of up to 30MW.
Where typically, UPS systems supporting this type of operation would be in a parallel redundant set-up (n+1), Eni has chosen to align Borri's UPS units to run independently, with self-supporting emergency batteries. These will be placed to supply two separate lines in each of the engine rooms and operate in its UHE (ultra high efficiency) mode and intervene only when there is a disruption to the mains power supply.
This configuration will ensure that each server in the IT room will be constantly supplied by two separate power lines, from opposite sides of the room so in the event of a power failure, all six engine rooms will remain operational.
Eni is confident that this high efficiency UPS solution from Borri will provide the flexible, reliable, multi-level protection that it requires. The units retain the same precision engineering and multifunctional properties expected of Borri equipment such as IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) technology and combines two sophisticated operating modes of protection: Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) mode and Green Conversion mode
Exclusively developed to ensure a reliable and efficient direct line energy flow, the UHE mode allows the UPS to run without the need to activate the forced ventilation system of the UPS, which means it can operate in complete silence and offer low stress levels on components that are subject to wear and tear such as fans and capacitors.
Borri's Green Conversion mode provides a unique, supplementary layer of power protection to ensure maximum control and separation between the supply line and the load, where power is entirely supplied by the inverter.
This revolutionary UPS solution has been further developed by Borri to deliver a cost effective, flexible modular option for other data centre operators and broader applications.
