Cannon Technologies introduces the Smart Space cabinet

Cannon Technologies has announced the introduction of its innovative new Smart Space cabinet – a next generation containment solution that incorporates sliding partition panels to increase cooling efficiency, enhance inter-rack security and make cross cabling between bayed racks more effective.

Date: 15 Jun 2012

Traditional rack designs utilise totally detachable side panels for maintenance or moves, adds and changes (MACs). However, when they are removed it can drastically reduce the efficiency of cold airflow within the rack by allowing hot air from the rear to mix with it, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the cooling system and increasing the amount of energy required to maintain the desired temperature. Panels that are removed for even the shortest period of time can totally spoil cold air/hot air separation and negate the benefits of an aisle cocooning system.

To address this serious issue Cannon Technologies’ Smart Space cabinet offers two types of sliding partition panels for racks bayed in rows – narrow partition and full depth panels.

Used in pairs the narrow partition panels can slide backwards and forwards to open cross cabling apertures between adjacent racks, or completely close off inter-rack access providing a highly secure solution. Either way, cooling efficiency is maximised without compromising access and they can be removed or added to bayed racks during the entire lifecycle of the installation.

The full depth panels also maintain cool air provision and can be deployed between adjacent racks and utilised as end of row side panels.

The Smart Space cabinet has been designed to meet the exacting requirements of high-density single use and co-location data centres and can be supplied in a number of different configurations – 25U, 33U, 42U, 45U, 47U and 52U heights; 600mm and 800mm widths; and depths of 900mm, 1000mm and 1200mm.

It also features four adjustable 19 inch mounting posts to allow universal server mounting and, whether they are opened or closed, the sliding panels always maintain close proximity to the posts to minimise hot air scavenging. Optional AIR-LOKK mouldings are also available to block airflow past the sides of the cabling, while allowing the cabling itself through. The Smart Space cabinet has quick release hinged doors that open 180° when bayed and 270° at end of bay and the units are provided in black and grey/white as standard, with other colours available on request.

Cannon Technologies’ business development director, Tony McLean, commented, ‘Maintaining the correct temperature within racks is vitally important in reducing the possibility of downtime and maintaining the temperatures stipulated in service level agreements. The elegant and functional Smart Space cabinet is the perfect solution for high density data centres and its unique sliding partition panels mean that maximum cooling efficiency is preserved and no cold air is wasted – saving energy and money.’
