With more and more bandwidth hungry applications being added to the network, we are at the point where the demands placed upon our networks are out-stripping the economic abilities of the switches that deliver the bandwidth. Combined with an increase in virtualisation, device proliferation and mobility, it is clear that the way that we must architect our networks has changed. The technology is now here to provide businesses with an Application Fluent Network, but can it be delivered cost effectively and without complexity? Manish Sablok, Head of Marketing, North Europe at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, explains the essential stages to building an environment to deliver such a network.

"A recent Infoblox survey of EMEA enterprises uncovered some surprising and disturbing statistics. Despite (or maybe because of?) all the press coverage about IPv6 World Day and time running out on IPv4 addresses, 80% of those questioned felt they were not well enough informed to take on IPv6, while 67% felt real concern about IPv6 deployment, and 35% did not even know which network elements support IPv6 today.
Most disturbingly, 40% said they still track IP addresses using spreadsheets rather than automated IPAM – a clear indicator of unreadiness for IPv6 migration. To cap it all: a similar survey showed that US enterprises are feeling less prepared than their EMEA counterparts.
So we set out a few basic facts and practical suggestions for IPv6 migration "without tears" says Dirk Marichal VP EMEA Infoblox.

The continuing need for cost containment combined with new government legislation is placing greater pressure on Data Centre managers to drive down power consumption and improve efficiency. Indeed, new state of the art data centres are achieving phenomenal efficiency ratings through the use of innovative technologies such as direct and indirect free cooling, with a strong emphasis on recycling and sustainability.
But just how applicable is this best practice to existing data centres? Can such significant investments really be applied to legacy set ups? And, if so, how can organisations demonstrate that investment in areas such as new air conditioning and high efficiency UPS systems, is delivering the improvement in efficiency required by both the board and to meet Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme targets?
Jason Preston, Director of data centre innovator, 2bm, provides ten tips for improving – and proving - data centre efficiency.

With 2010 coming to an end, how will it be remembered? It might be famed as the year of the coalition Government, the year when England gave a disappointing World Cup performance, or even for the volcanic ash cloud that engulfed Europe. But what did 2010 mean for the business world? For most of the UK's industries, it was the year that brought with it huge amounts of business data. And what's more, Gartner expects enterprise data to grow by 650 per cent in the next five years.
By Dave Green, senior product manger, high capacity services, Virgin.

The security market has reached a critical inflection point. Costs continue to escalate, complexity is increasing and, critically, the reality of Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) is undermining legacy anti-threat strategies. The result is a shift from threat focused controls to target focused visibility and an evolution from prevention to increased detection and response. As Dwayne Melancon, Vice President of Log Management, Tripwire, explains, APTs are complex, long lasting and typically comprise many, many small events over months. Without an integrated approach to identify the relationships between events and changes, organisations will be left wide open to vulnerabilities and threats.

Companies with multiple locations rely on a highly efficient IT infrastructure to ensure the smooth running of IT processes and reliable communication both internally (across company locations),as well as externally (with partners and customers). Ongoing monitoring is vital for multiple-location companies, as it enablesthem to keep a constant and close eye on the availability and bandwidth usage of locally distributed networks. This provides important information about the state of the networks and alerts IT staff when devices in the network are going to reach critical levels. By Daniel Zobel, Documentation and Support at Paessler AG.

?The times they are a changing' ? is a refrain that could well have been written specifically for today's shifting IT landscape. In the past the network infrastructure has been at the heart of the IT function, with the principal focus on network and hardware management; on monitoring and reporting availability, health and performance. But today there's a quiet revolution taking place in many IT organisations, as software is increasingly becoming the key focus for IT departments. This shift in emphasis has been caused by a number of factors: the recognition that new technology and approaches like SaaS and SOA have changed the nature of software development, plus the realisation that the rise of e-commerce, and web applications means that IT is no longer seen as a cost overhead, but as a source of competitive advantage, productivity gains and revenue. All of this is great news for future generations of software developers as more budgets and opportunities will open up to those with the requisite skills. Yet, with this new drive towards a software-centric view of the world comes responsibilities and greater complexity. Read more
